Applications for Transfer

The transfer application period for students for the 2013-2014 school year has begun and concludes on June 1, 2013.  Transfer applications are available in the SVHS office, IB office, SVHS guidance office or on the JEFCOED website, www.jefcoed.com.  Parents of all students currently on a transfer will need to complete another transfer application during this time frame.

Congratulations to JCIB for making three important national rankings lists

    1. Ranked # 1 in Alabama and # 19 nationally by the Washington Post http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/schools/2013/list/national/

    3. #15 in the Newsweek Daily Beast America’s Best High School, #1 in Alabama. The next school in Alabama was ranked #152. http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/features/2013/americas-best-high-schools.html

The High Schools That Work team visited SVHS and SVTA on April 22-24.  SVHS and SVTA each were awarded a $10,000 grant from the organization. SV won a High Schools That Work Grant and SVTA won a Career Tech Centers That Work Grant.

The Urban Sites Network brought over 30 visitors from all over the country on April 26 to observe the great things happening with reading and writing in our English Language Arts Department.

The library has been awarded a $2,500.00 grant from the Irondale Education and Youth Fund to purchase an eReader charging cart, protective covers, and anti-glare screen kits for the 32 Nook eReaders provided to SVHS/JCIB/SVTA by the Jefferson County Board of Education this year.

A Mountie thank you goes to Ken Lass and the Channel 42 "One Class at Time" Program for awarding the library $1,000.00 to purchase a wireless printer. The program is co-sponsored by Channel 42, Buffalo Rock Pepsi, and American's First Financial.

The JCIB Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta is now offering tutoring for all math classes on Wednesday mornings from 7:15-7:45 in Mrs. Sahawneh's classroom. (223IB). All SVHS and JCIB students are welcome to attend.

 Achievements, Awards, and Accolades

Katelyn Hester accepted a softball scholarship to Talladega College.
 
Shanell Jackson will sign a basketball scholarship to Miles College. 
 
Morgan William and Courtlin Davis have been selected to participate in the AHSAA North – South All Star Basketball games this summer.
 
Congratulations to Ms. Nidia Fernandez-Lee who was selected as Shades Valley Teacher of the Year.
 
Congratulations to William White who has been selected as a judge for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Olympics.
