The ALSMAP Summer Bridge Program is a 10-week academic opportunity funded by the National Science Foundation for underrepresented minority students accepted to UAB that plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) the fall of 2017 at UAB.
Application Deadline: Friday, May 12, 2017. Applications are located in the top drawer of the filing cabinet located in the seating area of the Counseling Suite.
To facilitate the transition of students from high school to UAB.
To engage students early in UAB academics.
To familiarize students with campus resources.
To increase the retention rate of students.
To acquaint students with the rigorous schedule of a UAB freshman.
To establish a faculty and staff support system.
To connect students with a solid peer group (STEM).
A student must:
Have completed 2017 Summer Bridge Application on file in the LSAMP Office by Friday, May 12, 2017.
Be an underrepresented minority high school senior accepted to UAB for the 2017 Fall Semester.
Plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
Have an ACT score of 20 or greater.
A student must:
Enroll in Mathematics 105 and English 101.
Participate in orientation, the closing conference, classes, seminars, tutoring sessions and other program activities.
Complete a scientific research project an an abstract for presentation at the closing conference.
Schedule no classes between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
Hold no employment or engage in any outside activities that would conflict with ALSMAP Summer Bridge activities. (No Exceptions)
Reside in UAB ALSAMP Housing during the school week (Monday - Thursday).
Adhere to all UAB Policies and Regulations and ALSMAP Bridge Program Guidelines.
Each student receives:
Six hours of paid tuition, fees and books.
Free campus housing and food allowance for duration of Summer Bridge Program.
Free tutoring and mentoring.
Access to Math Computer Center, Writing Center, Sterne Library and Campus Recreation Center.
Stipend for successful program participation.
